"Facebook Therapy Memes"

A lot of us may have come across this template also known as 'Facebook memes' on our social media feeds-I did too. It really annoyed me because a lot of people neglect the need to go to actual therapy and seem to 'recover' by looking at such memes. Not to mention, many at times these posts are accompanied with captions impeding therapy and calling it a 'scam'.

I took an online poll via my Instagram account and the response was analogous. There were people pro to such kind of memes and on the other hand people who were not so much.

It really helped me look at this topic from both the point of views and wanted to discuss whether this is actually a good thing or not which is why I chose to write a post on it.

Let's get to it!

Out of 100 people voting, the number was an exact 50-50 tie. I also had plenty of people expressing their point of views for their choice in my dm's.

Although a lot of people said was that it was a "coping mechanism" and a "joke", majority of people could not tell the difference between therapy and therapeutic or therapy and a hobby.

These kind of memes usually promote the idea of not going to therapy and rather indulging in it in the form of memes.
See, I get that therapy is expensive and big time stigmatised but one of the reasons it is trivialised further is because of such memes. People assume it to be okay to neglect help and rather rant out in the comments of such posts-which as I mentioned above, are coupled with captions shirking actually going to therapy.

Using templates like

is not helpful and does not promote the actual cause of getting help. It's like saying saying a kidney transplant is too expensive, I'll just go have paneer instead.

Something might be therapeutic, but it is not a replacement for therapy.

That was it for today's post!

  1. This post needs a major exposure because therapy is something neglected by a lot of people, many of whom I know who need professional and medical help but are either 1) Scared to tell their parents or 2) Have been influenced by stuff like these and indulge in them. They say it helps them but from what I'm seeing, nothing seems to be changing. That's why I feel it's important to approach professional help and ranting, or talking to someone who can guide you than just shunning it. Thank you for bringing this up, it's an issue needed to be addressed.
