Procrastination

Procrastination is the act of delaying or putting off tasks until the last minute, or past their deadline.

Let's admit it, we all do it, and it comes back to bite us in the worst way every time. Nevertheless, we still don't learn from it and still continue doing it :P

A lot of y'all have often asked me how I manage to juggle between school, tuition, writing a blog, taking part in extracurricular and still managing to find time to binge shows on Netflix and sleep for long; I think the answer to that is- not procrastinating.

I learnt it the hard way but trust me, its worth it once you get a hold of it.

You, yourself will realize how many activities you can perform in a day if you just stop dilly-dallying.

Why do we do it?

In simple words, we often assume that projects won't take as long to finish as they really will, which can lead to a false sense of security when we believe that we still have plenty of time to complete these tasks. We feel lazy or get bored while performing the task, which happens; but what can you do? Karna toh padhega na, either now or later. Just that if you do it now, you'll get better results at the end.

The 'Ho Jayega' Attitude

Honestly, stop that. Try to avoid saying "ho jayega, bohot time hai" or "karlege" or "ya it's okay, it'll get done". Instead, I'd suggest replacing that with, "Okay, I have to get this done in this much time, I cannot waste a second."

The more you delay, the more stressed you get towards the end and the outcome doesn't turn out to be of good quality.

Excuses

We all give them, just because we couldn't complete the task on time because- Procrastination.

Stop saying 'I was unwell' as an excuse only because you were too lazy to do it or it slipped off your mind.

Avoid saying "I'll do it tomorrow" because who knows what will happen tomorrow? Maybe you'll get more work, or you'll have some other activity pop up. Instead when you have the time just karke khatam karo.

Take Breaks. No one's stopping you. Everyone needs to rest for a while to get over stress and tiredness. What I'm saying is that don't extend it over your needs.

How can you avoid it?

  1. Make a to-do list: I cannot emphasize enough how effective this is. I have one hanging above my study table so every time I get a task to complete, I write it down immediately-so it doesn't slip off my mind. Write it down someplace and what time you'll do something and make sure you follow it. Keep in mind not to add too and just up to how much you can take. Break down the items on your list into small, manageable steps so that your tasks don’t seem so overwhelming. Don't overload.
  2. Avoid social media while performing it: It serves as a medium of distraction and will delay you more. Try muting your notifications or downloading apps that avoid you from distracting yourself. Listening to music also helps a lot of people be more productive but honestly, it serves as a distraction for me :P Commit to a task and don't stop until its complete.
  3. Treat yourself: Every time you finish a task on time, congratulate yourself and reward yourself by indulging in something you find fun. This improves your mood and also gives you the energy to continue with more jobs.
  4. Try eating an 'elephant beetle': Get those responsibilities which you find least satisfactory out of the manner early. This will provide you with the relaxation of the day to pay attention on work which you find more enjoyable.

These are a few measures I try to take while doing any job so that I don't lag much towards the end.

In conclusion,
