Murder Mysteries and Me :)
I can't remember a time before I discovered the wonders of spy thrillers and murder mysteries. Ever
since my childhood, I have always had a fantasy for crime fiction and detective stories. Be it the
brilliant writings of Carolyn Keene in “The Nancy Drew” series, or the amazing direction of Dan
Goor in “Brooklyn Nine-Nine”, solving puzzles has always fascinated me.
The Brooklyn Nine-Nine episode titled “The Bank Job” is my favourite from the show. It was filled
with various instances of thrill and suspense and the ending was absolutely shocking leaving me
wanting more.
As a person who enjoys problem-solving, this genre has resonated with me. The reason why I love
reading as well as watching shows from this category is that it always keeps me on the edge of my
seat. Twists and turns, clandestine subplots and innumerable possibilities, all to add up against the one
person you suspect the least.
The enthralling escapade of reading about one’s imagination and how they bring it to life is
exhilarating. The conception of the author to offer the right amount of emphasis on an often-overlooked minute detail that plays a major role at the end is simply mind-blowing.
It is known that reading about sinful activities is invigorating. Reading about a sin is not a sin,
therefore, gives the readers a sense of satisfaction of committing a crime without literally doing it. It
provides a sense of escapism from the mundane life of one and helps them explore the minds of
people imitating a sinner.
Another reason why I absolutely adore crime fiction is for its spectacular visualisation. The keen
attention to detail, making sure the right characters are present on the scene at the right time, the
composite writing and dialogues to make it as captivating as possible made me fall in love with this
genre even more.
The engrossing gush of thoughts with every passing chapter, episode and scene gives me a feeling of
satisfaction of being able to grasp and solve the mystery of the protagonist. The best part of which is,
it is always direct. Simple and crisp, without drawing it out to an unnecessary extent and futile
diegesis’.
A well-written story mainly consists of 3 parts-Introduction, Plot and Climax. However, a well written murder mystery contains a lot more. Unlike other genres that begin with a platitude, each
crime story has a unique start. They allure its readers and make them feel as if they are living in it. We
become the detectives ourselves, working through clues and puzzles to solve the mystery before us -
one who’s result is always unpredictable adding to the element of surprise.
Each new story explores a new way of finding a loophole in the social system as the author
transverses through it in their own angle and imagination, thus making it enjoyable.
Crime Fiction and I have always had an idyll chemistry. It never fails to amaze me. To conclude with
the famous words of Natsuki Takaya, “...and then a murder mystery will occur.”
