All truth disclosed I'm writing this blog at 2 am in the morning so you may be reading a totally non-Instagram-inspired blog/rant :)
We've all heard the term ✨Perfectionism✨
But just as a general recap, in terms of Wikipedia:
Perfectionism is a broad personality trait characterized by a person's concern with striving for flawlessness and perfection and is accompanied by critical self-evaluations and concerns regarding others' evaluations.
Simply put,
It's impossible to get a task done because you're constantly concerned with the fact that it isn't "Perfect".
A perfectionist is very critical of themselves as well as the world around them; typically having the mindset of "all or nothing".
Stemming from perhaps childhood trauma or the burden of being the 'perfect kid' (in Indian terms: Sharma ji ka Beta/Beti), the term "Almost perfect" doesn't exist in their dictionary (cue Chennai Express theme song)
But it's not all that we think it is.
It's not all bad. And it's definitely not OCD.

See, when we think of the word "Perfectionism", the idea of "everything pit, pat and perfect, not a single word from here to there, very organised" or "can't get any work done because they internally know that they'll never be good enough" comes to mind.
Good Perfectionism vs Bad Perfectionism vs OCD
Experts have pinpointed two types of perfectionism: the good kind and the bad kind. The former are those who give their all and have high standards for themselves and others, but view failures as opportunities to learn rather than as signs of being inferior. They're the 'high-achievers' who strive for excellence.
On the flip side, Bad perfectionists are those who sit back doing absolutely nothing because they literally cannot get themselves to do it. Reasons could be aplenty: Laziness, Procrastination, simply the inability to, or even OCD - Not always but it is probable.
You don't have OCD if you struggle with perfectionism.
You struggle with perfectionism if you have OCD.
There's a difference.
There's nothing wrong with aiming high, but when you're shooting for perfection, it should ignite inspiration, not anxiety. Believe it or not, research suggests that people who are driven to please or impress others actually perform worse than those who simply set ambitious goals for themselves. So, if you find yourself pushing hard mainly because you're worried about what others might think, it's time to let go of those impossible expectations and instead focus on being good enough for yourself.
Good Perfectionism is healthy. Bad perfectionism is not.
Your quirks and even your little mistakes add personality to your work, so let the machines worry about perfect precision (tbh they're not so accurate all the time either - just ask Chat-GPT about a book and you'll see). Remember, to err is human. Embrace your humanity and use it as a tool for growth and creativity.
I cannot simply just write a blog on "How to overcome perfectionism".
It's different for every single person. No two people struggle with the exact same problem and I'm not licensed and thus cannot go out there with a loudspeaker, bragging about overcoming it. However, what I can say is that: Whatever you do. Wherever you are. It's not always that bad.
