Sleep and Mental Health-Are they related?

 Heyy everyone!

Welcome back!

So, a couple of months ago I had written on the benefits of sleep on our regular life, which gave rise to a lot of messages in my dm saying, "How are sleep and mental health related?" and "What are it's benefits on our mental health then?"  Not kidding, they were flooding! Which is why I thought, why not write on this as a blog post 🤷🏻‍♀️

Without further ado, lets get to it :)

Are sleep and mental health related?

The short answer is, yes. Sleep and mental health are closely interconnected.

Not getting enough sleep skews our ability to regulate our emotions. In the long run, this can increase our risk of developing a mental health condition. Poor sleep leads to worrying. Worrying leads to poor sleep. Worrying about sleep is like your mind trying to fight itself. It isn't a position you want to be stuck in.

The second your sleep schedule starts messing up is when your mental health might begin to deteriorate.

Not to mention, sleep disorders are a very real repercussions which affect your mental health!

To answer your next question on popular demand,

What are it's benefits on our mental health then?

So, I had to research quite a bit for this one and came across a lot of unique benefits that sleep has on our mental health. Here are few of my favourites :)

I know I mentioned this in the earlier post but this has to come under my top category. Especially among teenagers, those who get adequate sleep are more productive and experience better performance, memory, and concentration than people who are chronically sleep deprived. Yes I am aware of the fact that with age you have you gotta stay up late to study and everything-I never endorsed that. Since I was 3 years I've abided by the 10p.m rule wherein my mind just goes off after it. With time it has extended to 11 p.m. (occasionally 3 am-shh don't tell my parents), but I don't extend any work after that time. Instead, finish your work/studies/etc, on time and just chill sleeping at night :) Check out my post on procrastination to know how to combat that!

I think we can all agree that due to lack of sleep one night, it affects the next day deeply. We tend to remain groggy and unmotivated throughout the day and often aren't able to perform tasks or produce quality work.
There is no denying the feeling of being refreshed after an awesome night's sleep. It allows you kick-start the day on a typically positive note, at the same time  a loss of or irregular sleep will most probably leave you feeling groggy and yawning during the course of the day. This eventually dampens your spirit and may set off numerous occasions that will make the day a substantially horrible or very tiring one.

This fact is one which I found across many websites. Did quite some research before I say this, it only lowers the risk. There are multiple factors which play into a mental illness-not just lack of sleep.
It is only a factor. For example, lack of sleep leads to fatigue into the next day which causes poor performance and this circle continues.

I guess in conclusion, stop neglecting such an important part of life🤷🏻‍♀️

That was it for today's post! Hope I succeeded in enlightening you all on such a neglected topic :)
Don't forget to share, subscribe and sleep!

Signing off,
Kuhu :)

    1. I absolutely agree with you. School can be rife with stress and deadlines but we don't have an option but to do it right?

It's better if you get enough sleep so you can be fresh to do it and deliver your work of better quality rather than stay up till 3 in the morning to wake up to poor results.

  2. It does influence our productivity and tolerance to our environment too, affecting how we interact with our surroundings by making us more irritable. Being a psychology student and a victim to the effects of lack of sleep I crazily relate to this post and I was wondering if you could dedicate a post to how we can deal with various problems such as this:))
