Self Gaslighting

 Hello everyone!

Welcome backzo <3

I'm sure we've all heard of the term "gaslighting" or watched several cases of this in movies.
A term which has recently gained popularity, Gaslighting can be defined as
"Manipulating someone so as to make them question their own reality."

There is also a derivative of this term, titled, Self Gaslighting, which is similar to the above definition, except you're doing it to yourself.
It's sort of like the voice in your head becomes your own tormentor.

In today's post, I'm gonna talk about What Self-Gaslighting looks like, and in next week's post, how to deal with the same.

Without further ado,
Let's get to it!

"I'm being oversensitive"
"I didn’t experience 'real' trauma."
"They didn't mean that"

Something that all 3 of these statements have in common is that it minimizes your own feelings and spirals you into constantly doubting and blaming yourself.
It involves suppressing and invalidating your thoughts and emotions 24x7. One tends to question their reality and minimize their own experiences.

After a point, you continue to do this in a cycle. It becomes a habit.

And most times, it isn't recognisable until it reaches a grave case due to its subtle nature.

Self-gaslighting can develop from the environment one is exposed to; be it a toxic relationship, a traumatic past or even something simple like a failed exam. It keeps manifesting itself, over and over.

In some cases, self-gaslighting may also arise because of or lead to mental illnesses such as bipolar disorder or depression, but nevertheless, it's always good to have yourself checked if you have such thoughts.

This, in simple terms, is what Self Gaslighting is and looks like.

  2. I want to take this as an opportunity to share my experience..
I don’t know if I’m self gaslighting myself but I hate myself and everything I do, constantly putting myself down and basically doing the opposite of what you call self love.

I don’t know what to do about it, I hurt others around me in the process and I can’t talk to people about my problems anymore. What should I do..
